BMX racing is a sport that is derived from motocross racing, hence the name, bicycle motorcross (BMX). The BMX race track is a dirt course that is made of a starting block, jumps in various places throughout the course and a finish line. Most races are ran in sprint format allowing only eight riders on the track at a time. Out of the eight riders the fastest will move onto the final race. The qualifying races give the BMX riders up to three times to get a spot in the final race. Depending on the number of riders there are in the event, there will be many mini races or heats that will filter into the last one that determines the champion.

These bicycles are built in such a way that they are able to handle well the heavy landings resulting from the tricks and jumps performed by riders in these kind of competitions.
BMX racing can be an individual sport or be organized by a team. They are generally organized for business exposure. Various companies may sponsor these competitions for their advertisements. They can be conducted for country championships along with business exposure. Various skills such as bike handling and quickness of the riders are brought to test in these competitions.
The BMX racing sport is usually facilitated by international sanctioning bodies such as UCI, American Bicycle Association and National bicycle League. There are usually some rules that govern these competitions. Some of the common age groups that participate in these competitions are; children of ages 9- 10, and professionals of ages 18 -21. This age category is further divided into the men and women professionals.
BMX racing is for the young people and young at heart. It is a fun sport catering to mainly the younger generation. Kids generally use 20” BMX racing bikes and kids under 6 may be using 12” bikes also. The bike used should be suitable to the race track. Bikes having 24 or 26” wheels can also be used. Many tracks allow and disallow certain sizes and types of bikes.
Irrespective of size and class, all bikes should have certain features to prevent accidents and injures. All bmx racing bikes should be stripped of any reflectors, kickstands and chain guards. The bicycle should be padded on the top tube, crossbar and stem. At least one brake in working condition is mandatory. An identification number plate is necessary on the race track. Some of the most well known brand names include Schwinn and Mongoose.
